What Are Warts and How Are They Caused?
Warts are common skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They can affect individuals of all ages, but are more prevalent in children and young adults. Warts spread through direct contact with HPV, which can enter the skin through small cuts or abrasions. They often appear as rough, raised bumps and can develop on various parts of the body. There are several types of warts, including:
- Common Warts: Usually found on the hands and fingers, these warts are rough and grainy in texture.
- Filiform Warts: These warts are long and narrow, often appearing on the face, especially around the eyes and mouth.
- Genital Warts: These warts appear in the genital and anal areas and are sexually transmitted.
- Plantar Warts: These warts develop on the soles of the feet and can be painful due to their pressure points.
Topical Treatments
Topical treatments are often the first line of defense against warts. Over-the-counter (OTC) options include salicylic acid, which works by gradually peeling away the wart. For more stubborn warts, topical imiquimod is a prescription treatment that stimulates the immune system to fight the virus. Imiquimod should be applied under occlusion (covered with a bandage) from Monday to Friday, with a break on Saturday and Sunday to allow the skin to recover.
Liquid Nitrogen Destruction
Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen is a common and effective method for wart removal. This procedure involves applying liquid nitrogen to the wart, which freezes and destroys the abnormal tissue. The treatment is quick, though it may cause a stinging or burning sensation. Multiple sessions are often required for complete removal.
Electrocautery and Curettage
For more persistent warts, electrocautery followed by curettage can be used. This procedure involves numbing the area with a local anesthetic, then using an electric current to burn the wart. Afterward, the dead tissue is scraped away (curettage). This method is effective for larger warts and those resistant to other treatments.
Other Methods
Other treatment options for warts include intralesional injections with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), which is an off-label use for recalcitrant warts. This chemotherapy agent can help destroy the wart by inhibiting cell division. Additionally, immunotherapy and laser treatments are available for particularly stubborn cases.

I am an ER physician and a couple of weeks ago my nephew developed a skin condition that I had not seen before. I consulted Dr. Sung right away and sent him a picture. He replied in less than a minute with the diagnosis and treatment. I sent it to my nephews doctors who also didn't know what it was. They were able to confirm the diagnosis and start treatment right away.
Without Dr. Sun's quick diagnosis there would have been a delay of treatment and the infection could have spread to my nephews brain. I found true dermatology through a friend of mine who came here before and came in after discovering hair loss due to an immune reaction that the doctor was able to diagnose immediately.
