Lichen Planopilaris (LPP)

Lichen Planopilaris (LPP) is a rare, inflammatory condition that results in scarring alopecia. It primarily affects middle-aged women but can occur in men and other age groups as well. LPP causes inflammation around the hair follicles, leading to permanent hair loss and scarring. The affected areas often appear red and scaly, with symptoms including itching, burning, and tenderness. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to managing the condition and preventing further hair loss. Treatment options typically include topical or systemic corticosteroids, immunomodulators, and antimalarial drugs to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune response.

Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia (CCCA)

Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia (CCCA) is a common cause of scarring hair loss, predominantly affecting women of African descent. The condition starts at the crown of the scalp and spreads outward in a circular pattern. Patients with CCCA often experience hair breakage, thinning, and eventually scarring, leading to permanent hair loss. The exact cause of CCCA is not well understood but is believed to involve genetic and environmental factors, such as hair care practices. Treatment focuses on stopping the progression of hair loss and may include topical corticosteroids, oral antibiotics, and changes in hair care routines.

Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE)

Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE) is a chronic autoimmune condition that affects the skin, including the scalp, leading to scarring and hair loss. DLE causes red, inflamed, and scaly patches that can lead to permanent scarring and hair loss if not treated promptly. The condition is more common in women and can be triggered by sun exposure. Treatment for DLE involves protecting the skin from sunlight, using topical corticosteroids or calcineurin inhibitors, and systemic treatments such as antimalarial medications or immunosuppressants for more severe cases. Early intervention is essential to minimize scarring and prevent further hair loss.

Traction Alopecia

Traction alopecia is a type of hair loss caused by prolonged tension or pulling on the hair. It is commonly seen in individuals who frequently wear tight hairstyles such as braids, ponytails, or extensions. The constant pulling can damage hair follicles, leading to inflammation, scarring, and eventually permanent hair loss. Traction alopecia is preventable and treatable if caught early. The primary treatment involves changing hair care practices to reduce tension on the hair, allowing the follicles to recover. In more severe cases, topical or injectable corticosteroids may be used to reduce inflammation and promote hair regrowth.

Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia (FFA)

Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia (FFA) is a type of scarring alopecia that primarily affects postmenopausal women, though it can also occur in men and younger women. FFA is characterized by a progressive, symmetrical hairline recession and loss of eyebrows. The affected areas often appear smooth and shiny, with little or no inflammation visible on the surface. The exact cause of FFA is unknown, but it is believed to involve an autoimmune response. Treatment options for FFA include topical and systemic corticosteroids, antimalarial medications, and immunosuppressants to slow the progression of hair loss and reduce inflammation. Early diagnosis and intervention are critical to managing FFA and preserving remaining hair.

Is Scarring Hair Loss Reversible?

Scarring hair loss, also known as cicatricial alopecia, is generally considered irreversible because the inflammation associated with these conditions destroys the hair follicles and replaces them with scar tissue, preventing new hair growth. Once the follicles are permanently damaged and scarred, they cannot regenerate. However, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial in halting the progression of scarring hair loss and preserving the remaining hair. Treatments aim to reduce inflammation and immune response, thereby preventing further follicle destruction. While existing scars and lost hair cannot be restored, timely and effective management can help maintain the health of the surrounding hair and scalp. For patients with extensive hair loss, surgical options like hair transplantation may be considered to improve the cosmetic appearance.

Patient success stories

Francis S

I found true dermatology through a friend of mine who came here before and came in after discovering hair loss due to an immune reaction that the doctor was able to diagnose immediately. He started me off with some local injections and while i was quite concerned initially due to the large patch of baldness and after a few months it went away completely. Now i can't even spot where the bald soot used to be and i am truly thankful for the treatments. I'm now visiting Dr.sung for preventative hair loss treatments since this seems to be a genetic issue within the family. Highly recommend this caring and thoughtful doctor!!..who would haave thought hair loss could be fixed??!!!

Tina L

I recently saw Dr sung for early signs of hair loss as this is something that runs in our family. He had administered five sessions of the true Derm PRP and several months later i had significant hair growth that people around me have been commenting on. I feel so much more confident and would highly recommend to others and who are also battling out similar conditions. In addition, Dr.sung is very kind and caring which added to the whole experience!
