True Whitening Cream

True Dermatology offers a highly effective treatment for hyperpigmentation and melasma with our exclusive True Whitening Cream, available by prescription only for our patients. This custom-formulated cream includes potent ingredients such as topical hydroquinone, topical tranexamic acid, azelaic acid, niacinamide, and tretinoin. The specific combination of these ingredients is tailored to individual skin types and needs. Hydroquinone is a well-known skin-lightening agent, while tranexamic acid helps reduce pigmentation. Azelaic acid and niacinamide are excellent for soothing inflammation and improving skin texture, and tretinoin promotes cell turnover for a brighter complexion. This personalized approach ensures that each patient receives the most effective treatment for their unique skin condition.

Oral Tranexamic Acid

In addition to topical treatments, oral tranexamic acid is another option for treating hyperpigmentation and melasma. This medication works by reducing the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for dark spots and discoloration. However, oral tranexamic acid can have potential side effects, which must be discussed thoroughly with each patient. These side effects can include gastrointestinal issues and an increased risk of blood clots. Our dermatologists will evaluate each patient's medical history and current health status to determine if this treatment is appropriate and to ensure it is used safely.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels, such as salicylic acid and glycolic acid peels, are particularly effective in treating hyperpigmentation in patients with skin of color. These peels work by exfoliating the top layers of skin, promoting the growth of new, healthy skin cells, and reducing the appearance of dark spots and melasma. Salicylic acid peels are known for their anti-inflammatory properties, making them suitable for sensitive skin, while glycolic acid peels are excellent for improving skin texture and tone. Regular chemical peel sessions can lead to significant improvements in skin clarity and overall appearance.

Sun Protection

Frequent application of topical sunscreen and diligent avoidance of UV light from the sun are crucial components of any hyperpigmentation and melasma treatment plan. Sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection and an SPF of 30 or higher should be applied daily, regardless of weather conditions, and reapplied every two hours when outdoors. UV exposure can exacerbate pigmentation issues and undermine the effectiveness of treatments, so wearing protective clothing, seeking shade, and using sun-protective measures are essential. By incorporating sun protection into daily routines, patients can help prevent further pigmentation and maintain the results of their treatments.

Avoiding Non-Approved and Potentially Dangerous Therapies

It is crucial to avoid non-approved and potentially dangerous therapies for hyperpigmentation and melasma, such as IV glutathione. While IV glutathione treatments may be popular in some parts of Asia, they are not approved by the FDA for skin lightening in the United States. These treatments are often administered illegally in medical spas, posing significant health risks. IV glutathione can lead to serious side effects, including liver and kidney dysfunction, allergic reactions, and disruptions in natural skin pigmentation. At True Dermatology, we prioritize patient safety and only use evidence-based treatments that are approved and regulated to ensure the best and safest outcomes. It is essential to consult with a board-certified dermatologist to receive safe and effective care for your skin concerns.

Patient success stories

Angela Z

TLDR: gentle clinician, expert knowledge of facial anatomy / muscles, good beauty aesthetic for natural look - highly recommend!

Dr. Sung fixed my facial asymmetry with just botox! My left side has always drooped a bit since I sleep on my left, and that has bothered me for the last few years. I've asked other providers to do this and they either said it couldn't be fixed or would do it and I'd see no results. I told this to Dr. Sung and 2 weeks after my appointment I noticed my left brow and outer eye corner were significantly lifted, and now it is finally symmetric with the right side of my face!

Dr. Sung did a thorough consultation, addressing both my medical and aesthetic concerns (jaw clenching, asymmetry, fine lines) with a gentle approach. He has the patient's best interests at heart, and cautioned against doing too much all at once even though this would be be more efficient / financially rewarding for him. Dr. Sung informed me of each decision to achieve the most natural look, and I feel like I had a say in my treatment plan that was balanced with his medical expertise. He also used small needles and a quick precise technique that I barely felt the injections!

Thank you again so much Dr. Sung!

Dr sung is the absolute best!!!

His skill of accentuating facial features while balancing out dominant points of contour to lips, cheeks, neck, and overall face is a true gift!!! I highly recommend true dermatology for any service or treatment you may be in need of.
