What Is Seborrheic Keratosis?

Seborrheic keratosis (pronounced seb-o-REE-ik ker-uh-TOE-sis) is a common, non-cancerous skin growth that often appears as a brown, black, or light tan lesion. These growths are also known by other names, including "seborrheic warts" or "basal cell papillomas." They typically have a waxy, scaly, slightly elevated appearance and can occur anywhere on the body, though they are most commonly found on the chest, back, scalp, face, and neck. The exact cause of seborrheic keratosis is unknown, but it is believed to be related to aging and genetic factors. They are generally harmless, but many people choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons or because they become irritated.

Liquid Nitrogen Treatment

One of the most common methods for removing seborrheic keratosis is cryotherapy, which involves using liquid nitrogen. This treatment works by freezing the growth, causing it to blister and eventually fall off. Liquid nitrogen is applied to the affected area with a spray device or a cotton swab. The procedure is quick and relatively painless, although some patients may experience a mild stinging or burning sensation during and after the treatment. Cryotherapy is highly effective and typically leaves minimal scarring.

Removal After Numbing and Shaving Off

Another effective method for removing seborrheic keratosis is to numb the area with a local anesthetic and then shave off the growth with a scalpel. This technique, known as curettage or shave excision, involves scraping the lesion off the skin's surface. The procedure is straightforward and usually performed in a dermatologist's office. After the removal, the area is cleaned and bandaged. Patients might experience some minor bleeding and discomfort, but these symptoms typically subside quickly.

Light Scar

Although both cryotherapy and shave excision are effective in removing seborrheic keratosis, they may result in a light scar at the treatment site. The scarring is generally minimal and tends to fade over time. Dermatologists take great care to minimize scarring by using precise techniques and providing aftercare instructions to promote healing. It is important for patients to follow these instructions carefully to achieve the best cosmetic outcome.

Insurance Coverage

The insurance coverage for seborrheic keratosis removal can vary. Inflamed or irritated seborrheic keratoses that cause discomfort or other symptoms may be considered a medical necessity and, therefore, covered by insurance. However, benign, non-inflamed seborrheic keratoses are typically not covered because they are harmless and will not develop into skin cancer. Patients should check with their insurance providers to understand their specific coverage options and any potential out-of-pocket costs.

Patient success stories

Angela Z

TLDR: gentle clinician, expert knowledge of facial anatomy / muscles, good beauty aesthetic for natural look - highly recommend!

Dr. Sung fixed my facial asymmetry with just botox! My left side has always drooped a bit since I sleep on my left, and that has bothered me for the last few years. I've asked other providers to do this and they either said it couldn't be fixed or would do it and I'd see no results. I told this to Dr. Sung and 2 weeks after my appointment I noticed my left brow and outer eye corner were significantly lifted, and now it is finally symmetric with the right side of my face!

Dr. Sung did a thorough consultation, addressing both my medical and aesthetic concerns (jaw clenching, asymmetry, fine lines) with a gentle approach. He has the patient's best interests at heart, and cautioned against doing too much all at once even though this would be be more efficient / financially rewarding for him. Dr. Sung informed me of each decision to achieve the most natural look, and I feel like I had a say in my treatment plan that was balanced with his medical expertise. He also used small needles and a quick precise technique that I barely felt the injections!

Thank you again so much Dr. Sung!
