What Are Skin Tags?
Skin tags, also known as acrochordons, are small, benign growths that typically develop in areas where the skin folds or creases, such as the neck, armpits, groin, eyelids, and under the breasts. They appear as soft, flesh-colored or slightly darker bumps that hang off the skin by a thin stalk. Skin tags are usually smooth or slightly wrinkled and can range in size from a few millimeters to several centimeters. While skin tags are harmless and painless, they can become irritated from rubbing against clothing or jewelry and may be considered cosmetically unappealing.
Who Gets Skin Tags?
Skin tags are common and can affect anyone, but they are more prevalent in adults, particularly those who are middle-aged or older. Factors that increase the likelihood of developing skin tags include obesity, diabetes, and a family history of skin tags. Pregnant women may also develop skin tags due to hormonal changes. Additionally, skin tags are more common in individuals who experience friction in certain areas of the body, such as those who wear tight clothing or jewelry.
Methods of Treatment
There are several effective methods for removing skin tags, each suitable for different sizes and types of skin tags:
Snip Excision
For smaller skin tags, snip excision is a quick and simple method. This involves numbing the area with a local anesthetic, such as lidocaine, and then using sterilized scissors or a scalpel to snip off the skin tag at its base. This method causes minimal discomfort and typically results in little to no scarring.
Electrocautery
Flatter skin tags can be treated with electrocautery, a technique that uses an electric current to burn off the skin tag. Before the procedure, the area is numbed topically to reduce pain. Electrocautery effectively removes the skin tag and seals the blood vessels, minimizing bleeding and reducing the risk of infection.
Excision for Larger Skin Tags
Larger skin tags may require excision, which involves surgically cutting out the growth after numbing the area with a local anesthetic. This method is also used to remove skin tags that are suspected to be lipofibromas or other benign growths. The excised tissue is typically sent for histopathological examination to confirm the diagnosis and rule out any malignancy.

Dr. Sung fixed my facial asymmetry with just botox! My left side has always drooped a bit since I sleep on my left, and that has bothered me for the last few years. I found true dermatology through a friend of mine who came here before and came in after discovering hair loss due to an immune reaction that the doctor was able to diagnose immediately. He started me off with some local injections and while i was quite concerned initially due to the large patch of baldness and after a few months it went away completely. Now i can't even spot where the bald soot used to be and i am truly thankful for the treatments. I'm now visiting Dr.sung for preventative hair loss treatments since this seems to be a genetic issue within the family.
